A Delhi Police constable has been arrested by the Vigilance branch for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a labour contractor and later finalising the deal for Rs 7,000. The constable had recently been posted to the Security Unit on transfer from South-east District.
According to the police, the victim is dealing with removing debris from old buildings demolished for reconstruction in South Delhi. He hires trucks, and dumps the debris in the low-lying plots in the area of South-east Delhi’s Jaitpur area. On May 25, Constable Raj Karan stopped his truck and demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 and threatened that if the money was not paid he would seize the truck.
The victim told police that on his request, the constable agreed for Rs 7,000 and received Rs 2,000. The balance was to be paid within two-three days. After Monday, the constable regularly demanded the balance amount by calling him on his phone. On Tuesday, the complainant reported the matter to the Vigilance branch and a raiding team was constituted to trap the constable.
“The complainant brought Rs 3,000 for the purpose. When the raiding party along with the complainant reached the area of Jaitpur, the constable again called the complainant on his phone and a meeting point was fixed near Kalindi Kunj. The cops apprehended him red-handed and the bribe was recovered from him,” said RK Jha, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vigilance). A case under Section 7/13(1) (d) Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has been registered at Vigilance Unit.
