Conman arrested for posing as Minister of State in Meerut

In a major embarrassment for UP Police, a bootlegger, who posed himself as MoS (Minister of State), was provided police escort when he went to attend a function in Meerut on Tuesday.

One Tanzeem Abbas was escorted by the cops without checking authenticity of a fax received at SSP camp office ordering to provide security to Abbas who enjoyed the status of a MoS.

Interestingly, the police followed the order without much research as there was little information about the ministry from where the fax was received. Interestingly, Abbas has previously enjoyed similar security covers by posing as a minister and the police have repeatedly failed to crack his game-plan.

The matter came to light when local BJP leaders created a hue and cry on seeing Abbas, a resident of Falawada, and started shouting that he was not the correct minister who was enjoying the protocol of police escort. They even complained to senior state and central party leaders about it. BJP minority cell convener Kuwar Basit Ali even filed a complaint against the accused at the Falawada police station, a police official said.

Tanzeem Abbas maintained that he is the chairman of the Higher Education Board which provides facilities enjoyed by a MoS. ‘We received the order to provide escort to Tanzeem through a fax on Sunday,’ said PK Tiwari, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) of Meerut. He said the escort was promptly withdrawn after receiving complaints about his real identity.

Meanwhile, the police have registered an FIR against him and investigations have begun.

Tanzeem, however, continued to portray himself as the chairman of the Higher Education Board. He is also involved in a court case in connection with alleged liquor smuggling. He was sent to jail on 18 June, 2014, in a case involving liquor smuggling worth Rs 25 lakh, Falawada police station In-charge Abdul

Wasim Khan said. Meanwhile, UP BJP chief Laxmikant Bajpai has demanded an inquiry against officials who provided security to Tanzeem.
