Scores of Congress supporters on Monday held a demonstration outside the DPCC office here, in protest against the party’s decision to extend outside support to Aam Aadmi Party as it looks to form the government in Delhi. The protesters raised slogans demanding immediate withdrawal of support to AAP.
Congress had last week written to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung about its willingness to offer support to AAP so that the burden of fresh elections was not put on the people of Delhi. But it is learnt that a number of senior Delhi Congress leaders are unhappy over the party’s decision to support AAP.
Newly-appointed DPCC chief Arvinder Singh Lovely, too, has come down hard on AAP, charging it with making derogatory remarks against Congress.Sources said there is growing resentment among Congress workers over the way AAP has been attacking the party.
Meanwhile, BJP leaders on Monday indicated the party is looking at AAP-Congress ‘alliance’ to form a government in Delhi as an attempt by the ruling party at the Centre to contain it in the national capital and adjoining areas in Lok Sabha elections.
BJP leaders, preferring anonymity, said with Congress losing support in the wake of corruption cases and scams against the UPA government, the party is now banking on AAP to build a credible counter to the right-wing party. Party leaders concede AAP may cause some damage to BJP’s prospects in Lok Sabha polls in some urban constituencies. ‘The AAP-Congress alliance is not going to last its full term though Congress may not pull the rug till the Lok Sabha polls are over,’ a BJP leader said.
