Balram Tanwar, second time MLA from Chattarpur, says, 'There is no doubt congress will come again in centre.' He expresses confidence that he too will get a seat for third consecutive time. Tanwar, who was also the president of Block Congress in 1985, speaks about his party and his views to Varun Bidhuri in an interview. At present he is vice-chairman of Gramin Vikas Board and a member of Delhi Jal Board.
What pushed you in politics and who is your idol in politics ?
I entered politics to provide better facilities to the people of my constituency and to serve them by removing poverty. It has been my desire to serve the mankind. I got my first opportunity to help the people in 2003 and people re-elected me by seeing the work that i had put in my constituency. My idol in politics is our party president Sonia Gandhi.
As MLA, what are the major works you have under taken for your constituency ?
I have solved the problems of sewage, water, roads and schools. In my area, a Metro station has come up because of my efforts. The area sadly survives on water tankers, but I am trying to provide water connections soon to every household in my constituency. Also, in our area, the school was available only till Class X and the children were having difficulty because of this. So I made sure that another building is built in the school so that children can study till Class XII and do not have to face problems.
If given an opportunity to choose one major project in your area, what will you opt for?
There are several problems in our society in which I want to enroll my self. But I think education is the basic need and my eyes are on it. Education is the only process through which an individual can make his own decisions and form opinion about things. I observed it is the only way to get better job opportunities.
Being a Gujjar, What message would you like to give to aspiring politicians and Gujjar community?
I feel proud that I am a Gujjar, I believe in secularism, I don't believe in communal politics and I would definitely like to advice the young politicians that they should join politics only if they think development is their aim. For Gujjar community I must say Gujjars should create a name for themselves with their work, so that they are known across nation for their work.
What is your take on coming assembly elections?
We would be banking on developmental work as our party Congress and individual MLAs have done a lot of work for the people. We would win for sure.
