With Prime Minster Manmohan Singh leaving for Tehran on Tuesday, the Congress president Sonia Gandhi took charge of the party against the opposition on the coal scam issue. Addressing a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Gandhi slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for holding the nation ransom due to the deadlock in Parliament over the CAG report on coal block allocation.
The party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi, while reading out Gandhi's statement, said, 'It is a matter of regret and shame that at a time when serious issues are affecting our people and country, Parliament is not being allowed to function and fulfil its constitutional role and duty. This is the handiwork of just one party, the BJP. This once again shows the scant respect it has for democratic values. What else can we conclude when its senior-most leader refers to government as “illegitimate”, thereby mocking the people of India for convincing mandate they have given us.'
Hitting out against the BJP, Gandhi said, 'How many times will we have to witness this deliberate and cynical disruption that the BJP has made a habit of? … The government and the prime minister are always prepared for debate and have discussion on any issue, on any CAG report.'
Gandhi slammed them for holding the parliament 'to ransom by blackmail which has become political bread and butter of the BJP. 'This attitude of “our way or no way” makes a mockery of the vision of our founding fathers,' added Gandhi in her statement.
Gandhi strongly attacked the opposition, saying that it was 'acting with wanton irresponsibility'. Defending the Prime Minister on the alleged coal scam, she asserted, 'Targeting the prime minister on the coal issue is entirely politically motivated…. It completely exposes the BJP and it's false propaganda.'
