Taking an aggressive stand against the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress on Tuesday announced their plans for an agitation against the Akhilesh Yadav government for its anti-people policies. The Congress also declated that it might field candidates against Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
In its first meeting chaired by AICC general secretary and in-charge of UP Madhusudan Mistri in the state party headquarters here, the leadership gave clear direction to the party leaders to hold aggressive protest against the state government’s failure. But cautioning the cadre and without taking the name of union minister Beni Prasad Verma, Mr Mistri also asked them not to use derogatory language against the SP or its leaders during their protest.
Later briefing mediapersons about the meeting, UP Congress president Nirmal Khatri said that Mistri asked the party leaders to go all out against the SP but in a disciplined manner. ‘UPCC is of the decision that party should contest majority of seats in UP and should not give walkover to SP or any other party,’ said Khatri.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Congress contested only 63 seats in UP out the total 80.
