The screening committee of the Congress in Delhi has reportedly finalised the names of 60 candidates who will contest the state assembly elections on 4 December.
Party sources said that the list has been sent to the central election committee of the party.
The central election committee is likely to take a final decision on the candidates’ names in its meeting scheduled to be held on 9 November. The meeting will be chaired by party president Sonia Gandhi.
Taking a cue from the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress has reportedly decided to give the rest of the 10 seats to Poorvanchali and women candidates.
Delhi assembly has a total of 70 seats.
The decision on the 60 candidates was taken in a meeting held late on Wednesday night. Sources say that the biggest hurdle was finalising the names of the candidates for the 27 seats that the Congress lost in 2008 assembly elections.
The party is also in a dilemma over giving tickets to three sitting candidates with criminal background - Dayanand Chandila from Rajouri Garden, Devender Yadav from Badali and Jaswant Rana from Narela. Sources say the party may give ticket to Dayanand Chandila’s son Meghraj to pacify the senior party leader.
The party is believed to have decided to field Poorvanchali candidates against their BJP counterparts. In the last assembly elections, no Poorvanchali candidate from Congress was able to register a victory.
The party is also banking on the Yadav community which has not got any ticket in the BJP’s first list.
