Congress’ final list in 3 days, Muslim representation to remain unchanged

The candidates are eagerly waiting for the disclosure of names.

According to Congress sources, there will be no increase in the representation of Muslims in the list of candidates to be fielded for the assembly elections.

During the 2008 assembly polls, Congress had given tickets to six Muslims - Haroon Yusuf from Ballimaran, Zia Mahmood from Matia Mahal, Mateen Ahmad from Seelampur, Parvez Hashmi from Okhla, and Hassan Ahmed from Mustafabad, Shabnam Khan from Kirari.

Congress is all set to repeat the same story and give only six seats to  Muslim candidates in the party. The party’s move is not likely to go down too well with the Muslim community.

Muslim intellectuals in the city have often blamed the party for not giving adequate representation to the community in the party.

Some community members have said that Muslims should get at least 11 seats keeping in mind their population in Muslim-dominated areas such as Chandni Chowk, Kirari, Gandhi Nagar,Okhla, Karawal Nagar, Mustafabad, Seemapuri, Sangam Vihar, Matia Mahal, Ballimaran and Babarpur among others.

According to sources, Congress is going to give a ticket to Manoj Kumar Singh from Kirari. Singh is a Poorvanchali. In lieu of Kirari, Congress can give a chance to a Muslim candidate from Babarpur.

Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association president Irshad Ahmed said: ‘Congress has done nothing to alleviate problems of Muslims. They are just seen as a vote bank. Congress has never given Muslims a good representation in the assembly.
