The decision was taken around afternoon on Monday following a signal from Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
Though on the face of it, it is being said that it was Tharoor’s constant praise for prime minister Narendra Modi that cost him his job the fact is actually no procedure was followed in processing the complaint received in this matter from the Kerala unit of the party. No showcase notice was issued by disciplinary committee to Tharoor or his explanation sought before his removal.
The move came after fresh evidences in the matter which have made escape for Tharoor from being prosecuted in his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s unnatural death case nearly impossible. There is increasing pressure on the government from within the ruling BJP to act against Tharoor, who they claim, is trying to ‘save his skin by singing paeans to prime minister Modi.’
Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has already gone on record claiming that he would file a public interest litigation in the matter demanding prosecution of Tharoor if the government failed to act before 15 November. ‘He (Tharoor) even tried joining the BJP to seek protection from prosecution but the move was opposed by party’s Kerala unit,’ alleged Swamy on Monday soon after the news of his sacking as spokesperson became public.
However BJP spokesperson Siddharth Nath Singh taking a dig at the Congress on Tharoor sacking said, ‘It’s Congress’ policy but it’s unfortunate, sad that it wouldn’t accept someone who wants to do good work.’ On the issue Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said, ‘Our work is to be the opposition, not be a part of their work.’ ‘A spokesman has to be a spokesman for the party not their own,’ said party’s veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad. Tharoor reacted to the move saying he accepted the party President’s decision.
