Congress core group reviews protesters-police clashes

The Congress Core Group meeting held on Tuesday evening, took stock of the situation after clashes broke out between protesters and the police on the issue of gang-rape of 23-year-old medical student which shook up the capital.

Held at prime minister Manmohan Singh’s 7 Race Course residence, the core group meeting was attended by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, PM Manmohan Singh, political secretary to the Congress President Ahmed Patel, home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, finance minister P Chidambaram, defence minister AK Antony and parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath. This meeting was convened after Sonia Gandhi expressed her displeasure to the party members on how the situation was dealt. Earlier Gandhi on Saturday night and Sunday morning had met the protesters at her residence to understand their view-points. According to sources, during the core group meet the main point of discussion was focused on the aftermath of the protesters, with the party top brass main focus being -  discussing and reviewing the situation. A source in the government told Millennium Post, ‘During the meeting, the leaders reviewed the situation after the clashes. In comparison to the other days, there was a sense of happiness amongst the leaders that there the city and people remained calm. But at the same time several voices were raised which focused on the fact that the police during the clashed with protesters should have handled the matter with more sensitivity. While at the same time the argument was discussed that there is room for violence (even from the protesters).’

‘The government is willing to engage in discussions with students and also civil society activists. In fact a series of meeting and discussions are already under-way between these groups and the government. The government is also inclined to consider the recommendations of the commission headed by Justice Verma,’ said the source.
