Congress and BJP slanging

It is of interest that while BJP President Nitin Gadkari has made a comment about Swami Vivekananda that borders a little on the absurd, the Congress has over-reacted on its comment. As is usual, the Congress seems to have little clue about recent Indian history, which  may be a reason why it has politicised a remark that has little to do with politics. Gadkari’s comparison of the IQ of Dawood Ibrahim to that of Swami Vivekananda is possibly a surprising comment but is hardly a politcal statement. It is hardly factual as well for, unless Gadkari is in the possession of a time machine, he cannot compare the IQ’s of the two men. The two men, belonging to different eras are difficult to compare. But it is sad to see the Congress party make politcal capital out of a relatively trivial statement. One may well ask if this a deliberate attempt to turn the people againt the BJP for their comments are surprisingly cynical. While Gadkari’s may have been a slip of the tongue, their’s is obviously not. It is not as if the Congress has a very high regard for Swami Vivekananda, if one were to go by the vicious remarks made about this great religious teacher by their party spokesmen in the not too distant past, which they seem to have forgotten. Vivekananda may have been a great figure in Indian history but the Congress has been in denial about him for a long time.  And it is not just Vivekanda. The Congress’s  opinion of the great leaders of India’s past, including many freedom fighters, especially those who chose to join other parties than the original Congress after the freedom struggle or had a different point of view even then?

For, has the Congress made up its mind as to whether Veer Savarkar was a freedom fighter or an international terrorist? In the Congress version of history, even Sardar Patel had little to contribute to India.  And what about a great man like Subhash Chandra Bose, the founder of the INA, who does not get his due in Congress versions of Indian history? Is this why it does not encourage the  commisions set up to locate his body or to find him alive despite the rumours of his alleged death in a mysterious fire? And what about Chandershekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh? Were they, according to this Congress, terrorists or freedom fighters? It just seems to spend its time building up the dynasty. It is not as if the BJP is any better. As Gadkari’s remarks show, the party seem to have completely lost track of issues that are of importance to it. Is this why comments made by Gadkari and other party spokesmen landing them in trouble? What about Advani’s comments on Jinnah? Has the BJP forgotten its core agenda?
