Congress all set for FDI rally

With just a day left for All India Congress Committee’s [AICC] historical foreign direct investment [FDI] rally, Congress party is leaving no stone unturned in its preparation.

On Friday, chief minister Sheila Dikshit went to Ramlila Maidan with former union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik, AICC general-secretary Oscar Fernandes and other state ministers to check the final preparation of the arrangements.

Dikshit has been given specific responsibility by the AICC to make the rally a success.

Political experts believe that the rally would not be only about FDI in retail. They believe that it will be a rally about the political leaders.

For the past two weeks,Dikshit held several meetings with her cabinet ministers, MLAs, councillors and trade unions to ensure that the rally turn out to be a ‘maha rally’.

Sources said that in the rally, there would be three dais. At the uppermost dais, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Dikshit, senior party leader Moti Lal Vohra, MP JP Agarwal and other senior leaders will be seated.

At the second dais, Delhi cabinet ministers and Congress Working Committee office bearers will be accommodate.

Whereas, third separate dais will be for cultural activities to entertain the Congress workers and supporters of FDI.

Sources said that, PWD minister Rajkumar Chauhan has been assigned the maximum responsibility.

The decorations of dais and tents, advertisements, promotions, hoardings and media handling work has been assign to Chauhan.

Whereas, transport minister Ramakant Goswami and urban development minister Arvinder Singh Lovely has been given the responsibility of around 2,000 buses, which will pick and drop the supporters from their area.

On the other hand, health minister AK Walia will be looking after all the health and sanitation works at the venue. Sources said that Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee [DPCC] president JP Agarwal also held several meetings regarding the rally preparation.

To make the rally successful, a running count of the number of people each local office-bearer is bringing to the rally will also be on the radar by DPCC office bearers.

DPCC is expecting around one lakh supporters from Delhi only with total number of supporters at the venue above two lakh at least.

Chief minister tasked each of the MLAs to ensure presence of at least 2,500 people from their respective constituencies and told them that their contribution will be monitored.

Sources said the leaders could even be judged for their claims for the party tickets in upcoming assembly elections on the basis of supporters they get for the rally, which has been organised to counter the opposition’s offensive against Congress-led Central government decision to allow 100 percent FDI in retail.

The Congress leadership is likely to use the occasion to explain to the people the benefits of allowing FDI in multi-brand retail and the rationale of other reform measures taken by UPA government to bring economy back on rails.

Meanwhile, a meeting would also take place on Saturday among Dikshit and AICC members including Janardhan Dwivedi, Murli Manohar Joshi and Sandeep Dikshit, to finalise the plans for the rally.
