Cong will not fight elections, will field CBI instead: Modi

In an effort to project a united BJP, prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and party patriarch LK Advani along with a galaxy of BJP leaders on Wednesday shared a public platform for the first time after the Gujarat chief minister’s elevation.

Modi unleashed an attack on the UPA government, accusing it of misusing the CBI to target political opponents.

‘The Congress party is not going to field candidates in the elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Delhi and the next Lok Sabha polls. Congress will not fight the next Lok Sabha elections but will field the CBI instead,’ Modi said, while addressing a BJP workers’ congregation in Bhopal.

Modi said the Congress should be overthrown as its government at the Centre discriminates against BJP and NDA-ruled states. ‘Congress doesn’t have the strength to fight us and so it has brought in the CBI.’ said Modi. The Gujarat chief minister said that the time has come to implement Mahatma Gandhi’s last wish that the Congress party should be wound up after Independence.

Despite the presence of all big leaders of BJP at the rally, a sense of lack of warmth between Advani  and the Gujarat chief minister was apparent as the two were not seen talking to each other.

Advani, who had sulked over the elevation of Modi by BJP Parliamentary Board recently and later appeared to have reconciled to it, was prompt in reciprocating Chouhan when he touched his feet as a mark of respect but gave a cold response when the Gujarat chief minister did the same. Advani merely folded his hands without looking at him.

Earlier too, when party activists sought to bring all top leaders for a photo-op under a huge garland of flowers, there was a gap between Advani and Modi, who beseeched Rajnath Singh to come in between. However, after the rally ended Modi grabbed Advani’s hand for a photo-op. The two leaders chatted briefly with Advani’s hand on Modi’s shoulders.

Even as Modi is on a spree addressing rallies across the country, Advani, in his speech, said, ‘Today if BJP has reached this place in Indian politics it is not because of eloquent speeches but the hard work and penance of party workers. We will not win elections merely on the basis of speeches but on the basis of the work done by us.’
