The Samvad Baithak (dialogue session) convened by Congress president Sonia Gandhi at Surajkund in Haryana coming Saturday would take stock of the government’s success in implementing the party’s 2009 poll manifesto. With the party making it clear at its highly successful rally last Sunday that it was going to fast-forward economic reforms, the Saturday session would focus on the government’s performance vis-a-vis implementation of pro-people policies.
‘While price revision of LPG and other petroleum products likely to deliver short-term political blues, the party has to spur the government to get cracking on its aam admi agenda,’ a senior party functionary told Millennium Post. This would also be the first occasion where the performance of the government would be assessed by party general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Sources in the party said that since there is a general feeling about the party losing ground in the urban areas, the baithak would focus on programmes of poverty alleviation in the metros and other big cities. ‘A programme somewhat similar to MNREGA for the urban sector could be visualised at the conclave,’ said the source. The onus for implementing this programme would be on Ministry for Poverty Alleviation, which is now headed by Ajay Maken.
According to sources, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s pet programme for the urban areas ‘Bhagidari’ could be adopted by the party as the basis for formulating a nation-wide policy. The Delhi leader has be asked to provide inputs for the discussion.
To be held at Rajhans resort in Surajkund, where the BJP national executive was conducted recently, this first-of-its-kind day-long session will essentially focus on bringing the party and government to work in tandem with an eye on the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for 2014.
Though this meet has been labelled as an informal conclave, the session would be attended by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, party general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Congress Working Committee (CWC) members, Congress’ Cabinet ministers, CWC in-charge of states and ministers of state with independent charge.
