Cong to look for friends in Jaipur

In search of allies during its brain storming camp (Chintan Shivir) at Jaipur next month, the Congress leadership may well steer clear of the matters of dissension within the party which can hurt its fortunes badly in the 2014 general elections. After holding a rally to promote benefits of foreign direct investment in Delhi, followed by a Samvad Baithak (dialogue session) at Surajkund, Haryana, the Congress will be holding the Chintan Shivir, as a strategic build-up to the elections in 2014.

The Congress ‘Chintan Shivir’ will be held from 18 to 20 January, focusing primarily on the issue of alliances as the Lok Sabha polls are less than 18 months away. This clearly indicates that the Congress is inclined towards focusing on its allies, especially after the Rahul Gandhi-led election coordination committee came into being recently. One of the three sub-groups of this committee, headed by Defence Minister A K Antony, has been especially set up deal with the issue of alliances.

Highly-placed sources said the main aim during this conclave would be to focus on the lack of coordination which exists between the party and the government. There will also be an analysis of the elections which the Congress has lost and assessing the reasons why this happened. The party will also be discussing reasons which have lead to the traditional vote-bank of the Congress which includes the minority as well SC/ST to have decreased. There will be a discussion on the policies introduced and implemented by prime minister Manmohan Singh. There will be focus on the issue of infighting which exists in the party, sources said.

The party, however, is unlikely to address issues of dissension including the ever-growing prominence in Andhra Pradesh of YSR Congress headed by Y Jaganmohan Reddy. While contentious leadership issue also exists in the state of Madhya Pradesh, with the ongoing fight existing between two non-resident state leaders like Digvijaya Singh and Satyavrat Chaturvedi boiling over. The Congress wants to reclaim this state somehow, as it had been a strong bastion for it earlier. In Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav is likely to keep the Congress on the tenterhooks.
