Cong to fall back on veterans including an 85-yr-old to swing fortunes

Similarly, the Central Election Committee has cleared name of another former assembly speaker 71-year-old Dr Yoganand Shastri. He is being fielded from Malviya Nagar. In the last assembly polls, Shastri was made to bite dust by BJP’s Parvesh Singh Verma from neighbouring Mehrauli seat. Dr Shastri replaces his colleague from the university and former minister 70-year-old Prof. Kiran Walia in Malviya Nagar, who is expected to take on Arvind Kejriwal from New Delhi constituency.

In the last assembly polls, AAP convenor Kejriwal had defeated former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
It is speculated that former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Ajay Maken’s name would be fielded from walled city  seat of Sadar Bazar. He would replace three-term former Congress MLA Rajesh Jain, who is not keeping good health.

Maken has represented Rajouri Garden in Delhi assembly for two-terms before getting elected to Lok Sabha from New Delhi in 2004 and 2009. In last Lok Sabha polls, Maken lost this seat to BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi.

After the Congress high command named Ajay Maken as the head of party’s campaign committee for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Maken is being considered as Chief Minister candidate in Delhi.

Another veteran being fielded is former Member of Parliament Mahabal Mishra from
Dwarka. Mishra had represented this seat in Delhi assembly in 1998, 2004 and 2008. Among 45 candidates, whose names is likely to figure in the second list, Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee, is all set to be given ticket from Greater Kailash.

Another three-term former MLA, Kanwar Karan Singh is all set to get ticket from Model Town. Delhi Congress had declared first list of 24 candidates on January 1.
