Cong holds sway, ‘maha’ dreams come true

Sun may have played hide and seek and fog a spoilsport on the day of the ‘maha rally’. But the sea of Congress flags made up for it by adding colour. The supporters marched across the streets leading to the rally ground of Ramlila Maidan on Sunday to the tune of patriotic songs and slogans. It was truly a carnival at the sprawling ground in central Delhi where Congress held its historical rally.
For the Congress workers, who have been at the receiving end for the past two years, the rally at the Ramlila grounds gave an opportunity to rejuvenate. They liked it more for the reason that the rally was being held at Ramlila grounds, where Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev held sway in the recent times.
Bus loads of Congressmen from far off districts of the state left for Delhi on Saturday afternoon to participate in the party rally called in support of the UPA-II government’s policy decisions, including the 100 per cent FDI in retail. From early morning, roads near Ajmeri Gate, Zakir Hussain college, ITO were jam packed with supporters walking towards Ramlila Maidan.
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who was given the responsibility for this rally pulled it off successfully with not a single untoward incident from the venue. The rally was attended by all Delhi Congress’s district and block presidents, besides its ministers, states MPs and MLAs.
Chief minister tasked each of the MLAs to ensure presence of at least 2,500 people from their respective constituencies and told them that their contribution will be monitored. The dais and tents were well decorated with Congress symbol (hand) and with a stage for cultural programmes to entertain the audiences.
Later, crowds were disappointed a bit as the rally was ended before its scheduled time with no cultural programme. A Congress worker, who came from Sonipat, Ramesh Rawal said, ‘I came here to see and experience the Congress leaders speech. Although, due to huge numbers I entered the venue late and missed everything. In fact it ended also quickly’.
The bhangra dances and dhol players from Tilok Nagar constituency were a great attraction for the party workers, who were stranded outside the maidan.
