Cong has lost moral right to stay in power: AGP

Blaming ruling Congress for the failure to curb Bodo-minority violence in parts of lower Assam, opposition AGP on Sunday said the state government has lost its ‘moral right’ to stay in power.
‘While people of Assam are passing through such a massive humanitarian tragedy, the ruling Congress is busy indulging in infighting. Even Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has claimed that one senior leader is trying to bring about a regime change with support of one of the UPA coalition partners,’ AGP president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta told reporters here.
‘The government has lost its moral right to continue in office,’ he said and accused the government of being negligent in providing security to inmates of relief camps.
Mahanta said the 20-member team of AGP, which had visited the violence-hit areas found no security personnel at the camps they visited. ‘In such a situation, how will the displaced people get confidence to return to their homes?’
He termed as ‘impractical’ the state government’s plan to have all displaced persons back in their homes by 15 August. ‘While CBI has decided to take up seven cases related to the violence, yesterday Gogoi announced plans for a judicial inquiry. How can there be two investigations? The state government should clarify this,’ he said.
The chief minister, he said, had himself said external forces are involved in the violence. ‘We want to know who the external forces are and why they have not been identified despite it being 20 days since the violence began.’
Mahanta also sought protection for people from Assam and the North East residing in other states in view of recent incidents of attack on some of them in places like Pune and Srikakulam.
Regarding the presence of illegal immigrants in Assam, Mahanta said only time-bound implementation of the 1985 Assam Accord will solve the problem.
‘We demand that the Assam Accord be implemented within a time frame. It is the centre’s duty to do so,’ he said.

DIGVIJAY SLAMS ADVANI FOR REMARKS ON ASSAM VIOLENCE
Congress leader Digvijay Singh has hit out at BJP leader L K Advani alleging that his comments on Assam violence were adding fuel to the fire. Singh said that Advani’s comments on illegal migration were ‘ill-timed’ as the state was burning at that time. Accusing Advani of abetting violence in Assam by making provocative statements at Kokrajhar when the area was in the grips of ethnic strife, Singh said ‘these (the comments) are like adding fuel to the fire’. He was speaking on the ‘Sarokar’ programme at Rajya Sabhha television to be telecast tonight. Advani, who had visited the area in last week of July had linked the situation in the state to that of violence in Jammu and Kashmir. In the one-hour long discussion, Singh also took strong exception to ‘BJP’s love for Jinnah’ when the Opposition party’s national executive member Seshadri Chari quoted late Mohammed Ali Jinnah to emphasise the seriousness of the crisis in Assam maintaining that the latter had told his staff that ‘within 10 years Assam would come to Pakistan on a platter’.
