Even as temperatures are dropping, the politics of blame game is heating up in the national Capital in the build up to assembly election. The Delhi unit of Congress on Sunday alleged that BJP was behind the ‘power scam’ of people living in unauthorised and resettlement colonies being forced to increase their load capacity.
The allegation was made at ‘pardafash rally’, organised by the party in west Delhi where the Congress also called for a probe into the ‘scam’ saying it was a ruse to collect Rs 1,000 crore in an illegal manner and the power companies were being protected by BJP.
The rally was held under the leadership of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and party spokesperson Mukesh Sharma who said that during their party’s rule in Delhi, a lot of development work had been carried out in unauthorised colonies.
They said the scam should be thoroughly probed and the guilty punished. They asserted that the recent seven per cent power tariff hike was hurriedly withdrawn due to the strong protest launched by the Congress party, but now moves are again afoot to increase the power tariff by 14 per cent after the Delhi assembly elections, and the BJP has given instructions to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to be in full preparation for this step.
A large number of people from the unauthorised colonies, carrying flags and banners in their hands, and shouting slogans against the BJP and the AAP, had begun arriving at the rally venue well ahead of time.
While addressing the rally, Kumar said that houses built on 50 square metre plots were ‘getting water bills ranging for Rs 5,000 to Rs 54,000’ and appealed to the people to not pay the bills, the release said.
He also alleged that ‘drinking water supply pipes, installed at public places for the use of people at large, have been disconnected, and the Delhi Jal Board has been forcefully slapping penalty and issuing challans on the consumers’.
He said it was very unfortunate that during the past 11 months, the local BJP MLA could not complete the remaining works in the sewer line project.
He said the people were also fed up with long power cuts, lasting several hours, and the power
companies were forcing the consumers to increase the load capacity and then issuing them inflated power bills without any rhyme or reason.
