Confidence call goes unanswered

That West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s no-confidence motion has failed is a sad reflection on our democracy. The present Congress-led UPA combination in power is already in a minority in Parliament. It should, therefore, have tumbled like a house of cards with the introduction of a no-confidence motion in Parliament, had some key individuals supported it.

That this has not happened is most surprising. The reasons why the no-confidence motion has failed and the government has not collapsed are not entirely clear. This government is also a scam-tainted one, with heavy charges of corruption against it. Many of its leading ministers are under investigation for corruption. If not the Commonwealth games then it is 2G where heavy charges of corruption have been laid at the door of cabinet ministers and others.

It is not just the issue of corruption. There has also been a massive rise in prices, especially in those of the commodities that affect the common man. Everything has become dearer and the common man just does not know how to make ends meet. Housewives find the prices of vegetables and cooking gas to be astronomical. Agitations are taking place across India, especially on corruption and related issues.

That some parties have offered outside support to this government and some individuals in Parliament continue to support this government is most surprising because it would be usual to assume that the Trinamool Congress and other Opposition parties as well as those in the UPA who do not see eye to eye with the government would have amassed the requisite numbers to ensure the withdrawal of support to this government as it seems to no longer reflect the will of the people. Therefore, the question remains as to why this did not happen. Recalcitrant individuals and parties that contiune to support this Congress-led UPA government  should reconsider their stand.
