‘Companies Act (2013) to raise profile of the CS’

The Indian Institiute of Company Secretaries of India concluded its WIRC annual regional conference, 2012 which was hosted by the Goa Chapter at the Institute Menezes Braganza, Panaji, Goa held between 30 August to 1 September, 2013           

Over 140 Students from WIRC Chapters in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Maharashtra and Goa participated in the event.
Over the three days, eminent faculty addressed the students on the theme 'CS – Believe it and Achieve it'.  Besides the academic discussions, there were cultural events and 'The Big Quest' – a corporate quiz contest.  A wide range of topics on the new Companies legislation and the impact on the students’ career were explained to the students.

Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said ' with the coming into force of the Companies Act, 2013 the role of Company Secretaries is being widened and that there are various areas in which the members of the institute could assist the Goa goverment.'
He also added that his government faced many governance issues and he needed the support of many professionals to bring about professionalism and accountability in the bureaucracy.

ICSI Council President S N Ananthasubramanian, in his address encouraged the participants by highlighting the growing importance of the profession of company secretary and the role that they will play when the new Companies Act comes into force.  'Role of company secretaries had been clearly defined and the profession is now moving towards being recognised as Corporate Governance Officers,’ ICSI Council President Ananthasubramanian said.
