Commuters get first peek into Gurgaon Rapid Metro

The 5.5-km rapid corridor was thrown open to the public at 11 am on Thursday morning.

Built at a cost of Rs 1,100 crore, the 5.5 km line runs from Delhi Metro’s Sikanderpur station to DLF Phase III and has four intervening stations. Commuters will be able to use the same tokens and smart cards that work on the Delhi Metro.

The coaches are well equipped with advanced technology. However, as compared to Delhi Metro coaches, the Rapid Metro has fewer sitting arrangements. The three coaches have arrived from German firm Siemens’ facility, situated in Guangzhou, China.

‘The coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor the passenger’s activities. Also there are display screens and a separate screen to display advertisements. All coaches are connected with intercom facilities, through which passengers can contact the driver in case of any emergency. There is also an emergency button in each coach.

‘Apart from that the coaches are equipped with fire safety equipment, along with possessing a route signage. There is also emergency exit facility in the coach’, said a rapid metro official.

The length of a DMRC coach is 3.2 metres, whereas a coach in the Rapid Metro is just 2.8 metres. A Delhi Metro coach can ferry 380 passengers at a time and has four long seats besides four two-seating arrangements, while a Rapid Metro coach can ferry around 260 passengers and does not have a two-seat facility.

Also the Rapid Metro does not have any seats reserved for women, old and physically challenged persons. The trains will have a maximum speed of 80 kmph. The outer layer security will be provided by the state government, while inside layer security is being managed by trained private security personnel.
