Communal tension grips East Delhi’s Trilokpuri after Diwali

A heavy police contingent, along with the Rapid Action Force, remained deployed in the area for the third consecutive day. By Saturday evening, a prohibitionary order under section 144 CrPC was promulgated in the affected area.

According to the police, 14 people – which includes 13 police officials – were injured till late Friday night and 10 ‘miscreants’ were arrested. In fresh violence that erupted on Saturday morning, many more were injured – five sustaining bullet injuries – and around 60 more were arrested.

Police officials deployed at the spot confirmed that around eight major stone hurling incidents at block numbers 15, 20, 24, 26, 27, 35 and 36 took place on Saturday morning.

‘It seems they are all hooligans residing in the area, claiming to be from two different communities, who have created this riot out of nothing,’ said a police official deployed on the spot. He said it also seems that the entire thing has been masterminded by a few, with their own vested interests.

A 14-year-old boy and his 13-year-old cousin were allegedly hit by bullets, when they were coming home from their tuition classes on Saturday morning. They were rushed to the hospital, said a local. Locals also said incidents like this – in a much smaller scale – has been happening here from the past few weeks.

However, Delhi Police said the situation is now under control but added that a strong vigil shall continue in the coming days.
