Common mobility card for Metro, buses from July

Come July and Delhiites will be able to travel on Metro trains, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses using a ‘common mobility card’. The government has decided to launch a project, which will offer seamless travel to residents using public transport.

The Delhi government is finalising the modalities of the project, which will be launched in a phased manner in the national Capital.

“We will launch the ‘common mobility card’ project in July this year, which will help passengers to travel in Metro trains, DTC and cluster buses (orange) run by DIMTS. The project will be launched on a trial-basis in Delhi,” said Transport Minister Gopal Rai.

He said by June-end, fares would be charged in all DTC and cluster buses through e-ticketing machines (ETM), and thereafter, the government would move towards the launch of ‘common mobility card’. “We are in talks with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to finalise a revenue-sharing model. In July, commuters can travel in Metro, DTC and cluster buses by using the Common Mobility Card,” he added.

“As per the plan, while boarding a bus, a commuter will have to give this card to the conductor, who will swipe it on an e-ticketing machine and, just before getting off the vehicle, s/he will again have to swipe the card and fares will automatically be deducted,” the minister said.

The common mobility card was proposed during the Commonwealth Games, but the project did not take off due to financial reasons.

As part of strengthening the public transport system, the AAP government has chalked out a concrete plan, including buying 3,000 buses till December, installation of CCTV cameras and wi-fi services in buses.

CCTV cameras have already been installed in over 200 DTC buses so far.
