Taking the lead, the meeting of house of South Delhi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday approved around 10 times hike in the parking rates.
‘We will try to implement the hike from 1 November,’ said Manish Gupta, municipal commissioner of SDMC explaining the process which would take at least two more weeks. ‘The minutes of the meeting are sent by the municipal secretary to the office of municipal commissioner and then a notification is issued to implement the decision. It takes time, but we are targeting to implement the hike by next month,’ he added.
The parking rates of multilevel parking are however lower than the surface parking. ‘We want to promote the use of multi-level parking as it does not create obstacles in the way of traffic but surface parking is the major cause of traffic jams in the city so the rates are higher to demoralise surface parking,’ said Subhash Arya, leader of the House in SDMC.
As per the new parking rates, a car owner who was paying Rs 10 for 10 hours will now have to pay Rs 20 per hour for parking his car while shopping in a market place. The parking charges which were Rs 30 for 24 hours will now be Rs 100 for the same time.
The monthly parking charges have also been increased from Rs 600 for day and night to Rs 2,000 for day and night passes while Rs 1,000 will be charged for monthly passes in day hours. The parking charges for a car in multi-level parking is half of the surface parking- Rs 10 per hour and maximum Rs 60 for 24 hours.
Similarily, the monthly parking charges in multilevel parking have been kept at Rs 800 for day and night and Rs 400 for day hours of the month.
The hike in the parking rates will now be implemented by the rest of the two corporations — North DMC and South DMC also. A proposal to the effect is likely to be passed in the meeting of the standing committee of East DMC on Wednesday.
