Cold wave, fog grip north India, death toll rises to 10 in Uttar Pradesh

Icy cold winds sweep the large swathe of Uttar Pradesh as ten people died of cold in last 48 hours and early morning fog affecting rail, road and air traffic, official said on Monday. Educational institutions up to class VIII have been closed in Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh, and warnings have been issued asking people not to venture out of their houses if not urgently required.
‘Ten people have died of cold related incidents in last 48 hours. Two of them were cops who were killed when their jeep dashed against a parked truck in Badaun on Saturday evening . Probably they were blinded by dense fog that had engulfed the area at that time,’ police spokesman Surendra Srivastava told reporters in Lucknow. Two persons died in Barabanki, 34 kilometers south-east of Lucknow. Deaths Three persons including a woman were killed in Ballia and one person died of cold in Maharajganj.
Srivastava said all of them were poor and died before medical help could reach them.
Temperature has dipped in UP. Muzaffarnagar was the coldest place in the state with 3.6 degree temperature. Lucknow recorded 5.2 degree; three notches below normal temperature, Met department said. Gorakhpur recorded a low of 4.9 degree Celsius, which was five degrees below normal, while, Bareilly recorded a minimum of 7 degree Celsius two degrees below normal.
