Coal India Ltd powers output by 8.8% in first 8 months of fiscal

The Government on Saturday said that coal output by national mining company Coal India Ltd (CIL) crossed 9 per cent over last year’s production adding that there is “still a very long way to go” amid the public sector undertaking (PSU) eyeing one billion tonnes production target. “Coal production by Coal India crosses 9 per cent over last year’s record production. Well done. Keep it going. Still a very long way to go,” Coal Secretary Anil Swarup said in a tweet.
Coal India Ltd’s production had jumped 8.8 per cent to 321.38 million tonnes (mt) during April-November period of the current fiscal. Coal India Ltd produced 295.40 million tonnes during the same period last year, a company official said.
The Government has set 1 billion tonnes production goal for the company by 2020. Coal India Ltd accounts for over 80 per cent of our country’s domestic coal production.
The Government has set a production target of 550 million tonnes for the public sector undertaking for the current fiscal. Coal India missed the production target for 2014-15 by 3 per cent, recording an output of 494.23 million tonnes.
Meanwhile, CIL subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) took top honours at the prestigious PRSI National Awards. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation MD (AMUL chief) R S Sodhi gave away the awards to MCL PR officer Vinayak D Jamwal and Talcher Coalfields assistant manager (Personnel) Asha Jyoti. The MCL corporate film A Coal Miner with the Difference bagged the top prize.
