CM writes to Haryana for water aid, BJP protests scarcity

With the capital reeling under severe water crisis, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit has requested her Haryana counterpart to release more water in the Yamuna river to overcome drinking water problem in the city. A breach in the Upper Ganga canal at Khatauli in Uttar Pradesh, has affected water supply to the city’s Sonia Vihar water treatment plant.

With the mercury hovering around 42 degree centigrade, the water shortage has added to woes of the people . Various areas in East Lakshmi Nagar, Shakarpur, Rohtas Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, IP Extention, Mayur Vihar and Patparganj in east Delhi faced acute water shortage. In south Delhi, the worst affected areas were New Friends Colony, Kalkaji, Saket, Malvia Nagar, Mehrauli, Munirka Vihar, RK Puram and Vasant Vihar. In south-west Delhi Moti Bagh, Mahipalpur and Dwarka were adversely affected.

According to the Delhi CM office, Haryana has agreed to release 240 cusecs of water from Tajewala, which should help tide over the present crisis in a day or two. The Upper Ganga canal supplies around 470 cusecs of water to Delhi out of which 200 cusecs is supplied to the Bhagirathi Water Treatment plant and 270 cusecs goes to Sonia Vihar plant.

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP workers on Friday protested against water crisis and mismanagement in the city. The leaders blamed the Delhi government for leaving most parts of the Capital thirsty during the summer months due to mismanagement of water distribution.

‘The crisis is so acute and the common people are in such a desperate situation that Delhi could face severe water riots in days to come,’ said Vijay Goel, Delhi BJP president, adding, ‘Ironically, while the water tariff has been increased from 35 paisa per litre to Rs 35 per litre during the Congress regime in Delhi, there is unabated deterioration in water supply across the Capital,’ he added.

‘NORTH DMC HAS MOST CONTAMINATED WATER’

In a recent report, the water supply of Delhi Jal Board was found most contaminated in the North DMC area. In the report out of 507 failed water samples, 487 are from the North DMC area. 'The water pipelines in North DMC area are very old. I have written a letter to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to take adequate measures,' said Mahender Nagpal, leader of house in North DMC. In the survey, the corporation officials picked up 6,922 samples from across the city last week of which 507 samples were found to be not fit for drinking.
