CM asks satellite towns to share Delhi’s rising burden

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday stressed on the need for more government hospitals and educational institutions in the National Capital Region (NCR) in order to ease pressure on Delhi.

Expressing concern over the rising number of students and patients coming from neighbouring states to the capital, Dikshit urged the NCR Planning Board and Union urban development minister  Kamal Nath to devise an action plan to provide quality services in the satellite towns.

The Chief Minister also requested the board to draw a set of guidelines on the disposal of Delhi’s waste in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The capital generates around 9,000 metric tonnes of solid waste each day.

Dikshit said that being the hub of super-specialty and advanced treatment, Delhi bears a heavy burden of patients from neighboring states. She suggested that the issue can be addressed if hospitals in the NCR region are upgraded in terms of capacity and services. She said a similar upgradation was needed in terms of educational institutions as well.

The Chief Minister further raised a demand for opening more night shelters in NCR. ‘Eatlier, we had only 30 night shelters. The number has gone up to 190 and most of the shelters are running above their capacity. Though we need more shelters, paucity of land does not permit their construction in Delhi. A unified strategy is required for NCR states so that more night shelters can be created in the satellite towns of Delhi,’ Dikshit said.

Meanwhile, Nath informed that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has agreed to release 50 per cent of the amount needed for the constructions of 24x7 night shelters in NCR towns.
He said another 20 per cent will be released shortly by the NCR Planning Board.

A decision was also taken to set up a NCR Transport Corporation to look into the issue of the Regional Rapid Transit System.
The government has decided to appoint a financial consultant to give suggestions on the sharing of investment between the stakeholders.
