CM and Khattar to meet next month to resolve water issues

Meanwhile, the first meeting of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal with his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar proved non-conclusive and both the states decided to accept the judgement of the court on the Munak Canal.

“I will go to Chandigarh in April to discuss the issue of Munak Canal water sharing with Haryana. The Uttar Pradesh government has agreed to provide more water for Delhi. We will soon initiate officer-level discussions to get more water,” said Kejriwal, after the meeting with Khattar.

The meeting of both the states was called by Union Minister of Water Resources Uma Bharti upon the review of Upper Yamuna Canal, which provides water to Delhi. “Both the chief ministers decided to accept the decision of Delhi High on the issue of water sharing in Munak Canal,” said a senior officer of Delhi government.

Kejriwal has recently inaugurated a 40 MGD water treatment plant in the Dwarka sub-city of Delhi, for which raw water is to be supplied by Haryana through the Munak Canal. “Delhi government has illegally broken the canal and set up a pump at Munak Canal for the Dwarka plant. There is no mention of the plant in our agreement to construct the canal,” said a senior officer of the Haryana Irrigation department.

The matter is pending in Delhi High Court. In its last hearing, the court decided to appoint an independent agency to give a report on the water sharing issue between both the states. Presently, Delhi is getting water through Munak Canal, after it was made operational following an order of Delhi High Court but the Delhi government alleges that sufficient water is not being released, while Haryana contends that Delhi’s demand is unjustified.
