Close to 100% enrolment under Aadhar scheme: Sheila

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said that Delhi has almost achieved 100 per cent enrolment of its citizens under the Aadhar scheme. The total enrolment under Aadhar in the capital has crossed 1.71 crore.

She added that the city government in the last few years has established an elaborate mechanism and put in considerable efforts to enable its citizens to get enrolled under Aadhar.

‘The government has commissioned a large number of Aadhar enrolment centres across the city to facilitate the enrolment of citizens without any hassles or difficulties,’ Dikshit said.

‘Delhi is one of the first states in the country to adopt the Aadhar platform for direct cash transfer of benefits.  Later on, in respect to nine centrally-sponsored schemes, Direct Cash Transfer was brought into effect from 1 January, 2013,’ she added.

Dikshit also emphasised that availing benefits under government welfare schemes through Aadhar has ensured accuracy and transparency, apart from minimising corruption, fraud, role of middlemen and duplication. She also reiterated that Aadhar helps in directing benefits to those who need them. She added that it is an example of innovative governance reform tool with the potential of ensuring radical change in public service delivery.

Dikshit said the Supreme Court has not denied any government agency from enrolling citizens under Aadhar, but has only ordered that Aadhar not be made a mandatory condition to access government services or subsidies.

She expressed hope that the centre would take up the matter with the apex court, keeping in mind the inherent benefits of Aadhar.
