Close aide behind BSP leader’s murder?

A few months ago, before Deepak Bharadwaj (62), Bahujan Samajwadi Party’s richest leader from Delhi, was murdered on Tuesday morning, his younger son Nitesh (32) had lodged an FIR against him regarding a property dispute. Nitesh himself owns a well-established real estate business in the capital and outside Delhi also.

'After receiving information about the complaint lodged by his son, Bharadwaj had also filed a case against him, concerning the same property dispute.  The two had been fighting about the property in question for the past two years,’ said a senior official who is investigating Bharadwaj's shoot-out case.

A close aide to the Bharadwaj family said, 'The duo  had been living in separate  houses for the past five years. Bhardwaj’s two sons Nitesh and Hitesh (35) started fighting over property issues and decided to stay in separate houses.  Later, Bharadwaj also decided to not stay with his sons.'

An official claimed clues found at the crime scene hints at the involvement of a close aide behind the BSP leader’s murder. 'The killer was not stopped at the gate by the security, and his car, a Skoda, was allowed to enter the farmhouse in the  Rajokri area. It is suspected that the killer chose the early morning, well knowing that Bharadwaj's gunman would not be accompanying him at that time.

He might have been a contract killer, hired by someone who had a personal enmity with Bharadwaj, possibly over property,' the official said.

Despite the fact that Bharadwaj was one of the richest BSP leaders from Delhi, who who stood for the Lok Sabha polls in 2009, he had a far from clean past. In 1997, Bharadwaj had taken over a 40-acre land belonging to Deputy Commissioner (south-west) in Kapasera. Bharadwaj and his son Nitesh had been arrested in the case, but the BSP leader won the case in the court. He later sold the property to someone.

After a few years, the Deputy Commissioner had filed a case in the High Court and this time the Deputy Commissioner won the case and the property was handed over to him. There were two criminal cases relating to property disputes pending against Bharadwaj in the district courts of the national capital.

'We are interrogating all the family members, guards and workers at the farmhouse. The call details of Bharadwaj are being analysed and we hope we will be able to nab the killer from the CCTV footage of the farmhouse,' the official added.
