Cleanliness, women’s security top issues in Rohini

Cleanliness, absence of public toilets and women’s security have emerged among the key issues in the upcoming February 7 assembly segment which appears to be set for a direct contest between the AAP and the BJP. The saffron party is buoyed by the entry of veteran leader Vijendra Gupta as its candidate from the seat.

Rohini largely comprises of middle-class voters. In 2013 Assembly Elections the Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajesh Garg won the seat and got 46,018 votes. Prior to that the assembly segment was a stronghold of the BJP since 2008 under Jai Bhagwan Lal.

As the AAP supporters were not happy with the performance of Garg, he was replaced with Charanji Lal Gupta as its candidate for February 7 polls.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded its old-timer Vijender Gupta, who had contested the New Delhi seat against Arvind Kejriwal and Sheila Dikshit in December 2013. The Congress has fielded Sukhbir Sharma. “Sectors 7 and 8 in Rohini are the most commercially developed sectors and they hardly have any public toilets. As a result, one may witness long chains of people urinating on the walls, mostly near the government schools,” said Amit Kumar Mittal, a resident of Rohini. He further said that despite pleas to the authorities in that regard and even despite suggestions by residents for location for public toilets, authorities are not paying any heed.

Mittal also complained about waterlogging and poor condition of roads — many of them not repaired after they were dug open for CNG pipelines. Reacting to the problems, BJP candidate Gupta assured that the public toilet problem will be solved if he is elected. Despite best of efforts, Millenium Post could not reach to AAP candidate Charanji Lal Gupta for his comments on the vexed issues of Rohini.

Women across the locality are complaining about security concerns after the evening as they face harassment at the hands of eve-teasers and snatchers.

“Though the street lights are working  in  residential lanes, hooligans loiter around and snatching incidents are not uncommon,” said a resident of Rohini Sector 8, who did  want to be identified.

“For Rohini, it is women’s security which tops our chart,” said Sukhbir Sharma, the Congress candidate. He further said that if he is elected he will put in place a security system for the women. It  will include installing CCTV cameras at crucial points. Sharma also assured a solution for the acute parking problem in Rohini, mostly felt by the residents of Sectors 9 and 13.

Rohini residents also complain about the civic bodies not cleaning garbage regularly despite charging them for the same. “These problems have to be taken care of by whoever comes to power,” said Rachna, a resident.
