Cleanliness drive should be held daily, says AAP

Responding to Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu’s call to participate in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Kejriwal said, ‘I have received a letter written by you on September 23, in which you have sought the Aam Aadmi Party’s cooperation for the campaign. Which Indian will not like a clean India? Every human being wants cleanliness, said Kejriwal in his letter while adding ‘Our party leaders and volunteers are already involved in keeping their surroundings clean.’

Kejriwal claimed there were media reports that some ministers are using the drive only for photo-op. ‘You will also agree that we can not make India clean by such actions. It is being heard that on 2 October, the Prime Minister will pick up the broom at Valmiki Sadan. It is good, but it is merely symbolic. Such a symbolic gesture may inspire people, but it is certainly not enough to make the country clean,’ said Kejriwal. In his letter, he also made a pitch for regularisation of sanitation workers in the city. ‘The sanitation workers will have to be freed from the clutches of contractors and their services will have to be regularised.  They should be given better salaries and a good working environment’, he said.

Kejriwal further asked for modernisation of cleaning methods in terms of technology. ‘There is an urgent need to immediately put an end to inhuman cleaning methods practices such as manual scavenging and replace these with modern techniques. The workers need to be provided with modern cleaning equipment’, he said.
