Clean India: Meghalaya village leads by example

According to the United Nations, India has the highest number of people practising open defecation in the world at 597 million. But a remote village in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya has a toilet in every house.
There are arrangements in place to ensure that there is no littering in the open on the roads.
Cleanliness has been a way of life in Mawlynnong, a village of 503, long before Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced his Swachh Bharat or Clean India campaign.
The village cherishes the title of Asia’s cleanest village given to it by India Discovery Magazine in 2003.
