CJI constitutes 3-member bench

Concerned by the allegations of sexual harassment against a recently retired unnamed Supreme Court judge, the apex court on Tuesday constituted a three-member committee to look into the  matter. The allegations levelled by a woman law intern state that the then sitting judge misbehaved with her in a hotel room last December in the national capital when the city was protesting against the brutal gang rape of a paramedical student in a moving bus.

Chief justice of India P Sathasivam said, ‘In the cases of sexual harassment, we cannot take it lightly. As the head of the institution, I am also concerned about the allegation’.

After attorney general G E Vahanvati mentioned the matter stressing it’s an extremely serious issue before a bench comprising the CJI Sathasivam as well as justices Ranjan Gogoi and Shiva Kirti Singh, the bench said, ‘We are taking steps.’

‘I have constituted a committee comprising three judges – R M Lodha, H L Dattu and Ranjana Prakash Desai. The committee will go into the whole affair and find out the facts and prepare the report from today evening they are going to start their work,’ said the CJI.

The intern has written in a blog about the alleged sexual harassment in a hotel room by the then sitting judge, who she said was ‘a man old enough to be my grandfather.’ She said that there were no other witness of the incident.
