Civic polls to test BJP chief’s political acumen

A test in balancing act faces the Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel, with the election process for municipal corporations being kicked off with a note by municipal secretary of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (South DMC), scheduled to be tabled in the meeting of the standing committee of the South DMC on Tuesday.

Ambitious councillors have started making rounds for various posts in the three municipal corporations while the incumbents are lobbying hard to save their chairs. The most furious political fights are for the coveted posts of mayors, deputy mayors and chairpersons of standing committees.

'The election of mayor, deputy mayor, chairman & deputy chairman of the standing committee will take place in the first meeting of the house in April. Therefore, the process of selection of five retiring members by standing committee, including the confirmation of the minutes, should be completed on or before 31 March,' said the letter of the municipal secretary. As per the DMC act, half of the members of standing committee retire after completion of one year term on the basis of lottery, but are also ellegible for re-election.

Similarly, all the members and chairpersons of various committees - education committees, remunerative projects cell, high-power property tax, works committee, and ward committees of zones, will have to be re-elected in April.

'The decision of the BJP chief would certainly affect the performance of the party in the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections as mayors, deputy mayors, chairpersons of standing committees, leaders of houses and some ambitious councillors are also lobbying for tickets for MLAs,' said a senior leader of Delhi BJP.

According to sources close to the party, Goel will be comfortable in dealing with North DMC and East DMC as BJP is in clear majority in both the corporations, but a tough homework is awaiting  him in South DMC where BJP is in coalition with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and over a dozen independent councillors. Interestingly, most of these councillors are actually BJP rivals.
