Civic officials, police stoned while on anti-encroachment drive

Slum dwellers pelted stones at a PCR van, injuring two police constables in East Delhi’s Mandawali area on Sunday evening.

According to sources, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation went to the area along with a few police officials in an attempt to carry out an anti-encroachment drive. The authorities had gone to stop an illegal construction that was taking place near the slums alongside NH24.

At around 5 pm, enraged slum dwellers saw a PCR van and started throwing stones at the vehicle as a result of which window panes were broken and two constables sitting inside the car were badly injured. They were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. When police went inside to arrest them, they were turned away violently. On seeing this, additional forces have been deployed in the area. According to sources, a case has been registered at Mandawali police station under sections of <g data-gr-id="22">attempt</g> to cause communal tension and disrupting public work.

However, police <g data-gr-id="18">refuted</g> the angle of a communal tension, mentioning it as a regular conflict that was blown out of proportion. Sources also claimed that a religious building was attacked following complaints from a group of locals against blistering sound of loudspeakers.
