North Delhi Municipal Corporation is all set to break its own record of tallest building in the city. After constructing Civic Centre, the tallest building in the city, the corporation has announced to build a multi-level commercial centre at Azadpur on the pattern of Civic Centre.
‘The new building could be the tallest building in the city but not less than Civic Centre. It would be constructed on the pattern of Civic Centre which houses the headquarter of the corporation,’ said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of Standing Committee in North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on Thursday.
Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Civic Centre, popularly known as Civic Centre is the tallest building of Delhi at 102 metres height and 28 floors. It has five multi-storey blocks with a total built up area of 1,16,000 sqm. ‘The new building would be one of the largest commercial complex in the city in terms of total built up area as the land is almost double of the area on which present Civic Centre has been constructed,’ Chandolia added.
According to officer of the corporation, the commercial centre would be constructed after demolishing 511 flats of the corporation built up five decades back on 1.21 lakh sq yard.
He further told that the building would be constructed by the civic body itself and process to get the loan has been initiated.
‘We will soon issue the tenders for the project,’ Chandolia said. As per the plan the occupants of the existing old flats would be accommodated in another to be constructed multi-storey housing complex at Dhaka.
The civic body has planned 1,500 government flats of all the categories in a multi-storey housing complex at Dhaka after demolishing 164 five decades old staff quarters which are in very bad shape. The corporation has also planned commercial complexes at Jahagir Road, Thompson Road and Minto Road. Here also old staff quarters of the civic body would be redeveloped as multi-storey commercial complexes.
Furthermore, the civic body is also in the process to lease out it old buildings like Novelty Cinema, Town Hall, Old Hindu College building which will fetch Rs 25 crore to the corporation.
