‘Civic body by-election indicator of coming Assembly poll outcome’

The by-elections in two municipal wards in Delhi - Yamuna Vihar and Nangloi- on Sunday would be the first test of poll management for Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel, since he took over the post. These two seats have been lying vacant since the deaths of the councillors of these wards. The Yamuna Nagar seat falls in the East DMC area, while the Nangloi seat is in the North DMC area. Both these seats will go for polls on Sunday. Earlier, BJP had the Yamuna Vihar seat in its kitty, while Congress had the Nangloi seat.

Sunday’s by-election has again exposed the internal conflict in the party, with a BJP leader, Mala Saxena, filing candidature against the BJP candidate from Yamuna Vihar- Asha Tayal. Saxena has been vice-president in the local area unit of the BJP. According to sources, a fraction of the party is against the nominated candidate and is supporting the rival. In Nangloi, BJP has fielded Renu Shoukeen against Congress candidate Ramesh Devi.

On Wednesday, Goel addressed a workers conference and took out a padhyatra in support of the BJP candidate from Yamuna Vihar, Asha Tayal. 'Goel is himself monitoring both by-elections in Yamuna Vihar and Nangloi East and has claimed that BJP will win both the seats,' said a party spokesperson.

Addressing the gathering, Goel emphasised on booth management. 'There should be at least 10 workers at every booth who can devote their entire time in getting the votes polled,' said Goel. However, the result of these two seats would not influence the power equation in North and East DMC, as BJP enjoys full majority in both these corporations. The results will, however, show the impact of Goel's movement and his aggressive campaign against  the Sheila Diskhit government in the city. According to political analysts, the result of these two seats would be a litmus test for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections and Congress has also put its entire effort to wrest the Nangloi and Yamuna Vihar seats from BJP.
