City’s parking woes dampen festive spirit

Now that Diwali is round the corner, the famous markets  of Delhi – Lajpat Nagar, Greater Kailash-II and South Extension-II, Janpath and Connaught Place – have become much sought after. These markets offer almost all the brands along with street shopping, drawing heavy crowd on weekdays as well as weekends.

Millennium Post
did a spot check to see what awaits the festival shoppers, especially when it comes to parking, Delhi’s perennial woe. Unfortunately, nor  there were extra parking facilities to meet festival demand near the markets, neither were the traffic police officials seen to set an order to the chaos, causing heavy traffic snarls through the day.

‘ There are a series of cars parked in the non-parking zone, and the police officials seem to pay no heed. Instead they are busy gossping among themselves,’ said Anjali Mehta, a customer in Lajpat Nagar market. On the roads connecting to the market like – Ring Road, Feroz Gandhi Marg, Lala Lajpat Rai Road – which leads to Moolchand, and Veer Savarkar Marg traffic mostly crawl at best or face heavy snarls, specially on weekends.

‘It is impossible to travel in cars to nearby market areas. People should take have plenty of time in hand if they are using these roads,’ said Tithi Ghosh, a student.

‘I have to park my car really far from the market as there are no proper parking spaces near the market area,’ said Sumit Gupta.

It is a similar situation in other market places like, Greater Kailash-II, South Extension-II.

But Assistant Commissioner  of Police (traffic-south), Azad Singh, said, ‘We have even deployed many volunteers, along with the traffic officials on duty. They are managing the traffic scene as well as the parking facilities ’.

On the days Millennium Post visited, none could be seen and cars and bikes were parked in the hapazard manner.

‘No one bothers about how and where they are parking their cars, which creates chaos in the peak hours,’ said Geeta Sharma, a resident of Greater Kailash-II.

‘I try to avoid the roads leading to these markets, unless it is an emergency, because the traffic continues from the streets to the important roads,’ said Manish Dubey, an executive.

Janpath and Connaught Place, the popular shopping hubs of the city face similar situation. ‘As it is office area, it is difficult to park one’s vehicle, and there is absolutely no parking facility in front of Janpath market’, said Ragini Kumar, a shopper.

‘The traffic and the parking facilities in and nearby these market areas should be more disciplined and controlled, especially during the festive season. The Traffic Police should take a note on this issue as soon as possible,’ she added.
