Manuel Pellegrini’s side took advantage of Arsenal’s draw at Southampton 24 hours earlier to knock the Gunners out of first place and open up a one-point lead in the race for the title.
City’s victory was tinged with controversy after they were awarded a dubious penalty that produced their second goal and a red card for Tottenham left-back Danny Rose, but there was no questioning the visitors’ supremacy at White Hart Lane.
Sergio Aguero had opened the scoring before Yaya Toure’s penalty and further goals from Edin Dzeko, Stevan Jovetic and Vincent Kompany underlined City’s superiority.
Etienne Capoue got one back for Spurs, but this was a major statement of intent from City, whose celebrations were slightly dampened by the injury that forced Argentina striker Aguero to limp off just before half-time.
City, who are now unbeaten in 20 matches in all competitions and have scored 21 goals in their last five games, routed Tottenham 6-0 at Eastlands on November 24 and this win was equally impressive in its’ own way. Jose Mourinho was left frustrated as Chelsea missed out on the chance to go second in the Premier League after being held to a goalless draw by struggling West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
Arsenal’s failure to beat Southampton on Tuesday had opened the door for Mourinho’s team to move above their title rivals. But they were unable to find a way through against a determined West Ham and remain third, three points behind new leaders Manchester City and two points adrift of Arsenal.
West Ham, meanwhile, remain in the bottom three, one point off the foot of the table. Chelsea’s disappointment in this all-London clash was summed up in added time when Demba Ba diverted Eden Hazard’s cross against the post moments before West Ham goalkeeper Adrian saved well from Frank Lampard. And the outcome appeared to justify Chelsea manager Mourinho’s pre-match claim that the Blues will have to wait until next season before making a sustained bid to be champions.
Villa win seven-goal thriller against West Bromwich Albion
LONDON: Aston Villa came from two goals down to beat West Bromwich Albion 4-3 in an extraordinary West Midlands derby on Wednesday.
Things looked bleak for the home side at Villa Park after they fell 2-0 behind inside nine minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from Chris Brunt and a Fabian Delph own-goal. But before 25 minutes had elapsed, Villa were level courtesy of Andreas Weimann and Leandro Bacuna. And before the interval there was still time for Delph to score at the right end and Youssouf Mulumbu to equalise for West Brom. After half-time, Christian Benteke finally settle the outcome with a 64th minute goal.
