City ready for third Car-Free Day

The Delhi government is going to observe its third Car-Free Day on December 22 in Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi. Private vehicles will not be allowed on the stretch near three Metro stations of Laxmi Nagar, Preet Vihar and Nirman Vihar from 8 am till to 4 pm on Tuesday. A cycle rally will be organised on the route from Laxmi nagar Metro station to Poorva Sanskritik Kendra via Karkari modh bridge 8 am, led by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia. “ The third car-free day will be a challenge for our government, as this time it will be observed on a weekday,” Delhi Transport minister Gopal Rai said. “Unlike other car-free days that were observed on public holidays, this car-free day will be a challenge for the Delhi government as we will be experimenting on a weekday from 8 am to 4 pm. It is also the one of the busiest stretches in the Capital,”  Rai said.

The transport minister said that 20 special service shuttles would be operational during the hours between ITO to Anand Vihar, and about 500 civil defence personnel and traffic supervisory staff would also be deployed to help the commuters. The Delhi government has also urged the citizens to dial a toll-free number - 1800118181 - in case of any query on DTC bus services.
