Right to Play, an awareness and fundraising organisation for sports, organised the third Children Consultation on Wednesday at the Indian Social Institute. Delhi Child Rights Club also supported the event.
It was attended by 61 children from schools such as St Columbus and Delhi Police Public School. Many NGOs also partnered the event. Most notable were Butterflies, Manzil, Casp delhi, Navjyoti India Foundation, Bal Sahyog, Angaja foundation, Deepalya, Asha deep foundation, Chetnalya, YWCADelhi, Salaam Balak Trust and Alamb.
The consultation commenced with discussion on several issues such as encroachment, non- availability of parks, and security and cleanliness.
Children came up with brilliant ideas to solve the day-to-day problems they face.
The solutions discussed by the children were then turned into a memorandum. They plan to present it to Chief Minister, Sports Minister and mayors of Delhi.
The memorandum states that all children should have access to a playground within walking distance of their home, all schools should open their playgrounds for the community after the school hours, children parks should not be used for parties and marriages, all children should have access to parks for at least five hours in a day, qualified sports or physical education teachers should be appointed in school needs to create a culture of sports, time slots must be designated for sports, schools should be provided with relevant and appropriate play materials, children groups must be created in all Resident Welfare Associations (RWA), among others.
Other demands included creation of dustbins and parking spaces in all colonies to prevent encroachment of parks for the purpose of garbage dumping, ban on all anti-social activities inside the children’s park, and availability of all the parks and sports facilities created or developed at the time of Commonwealth Games for all children.
The consultation ended with a vote of thanks and giving homework to children on how they will collaborate with Resident Welfare Associations to find solutions to their problems.
