Films should be utilised as tool for women’s empowerment as they are reflection of society and there must be a quest for social change in which movies should seek a redefinition of women as objects of male gaze, Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam on Wednesday said.
‘Women characters should possess guts to dismantle the existing power structures as well as be able to negotiate their own position within this structure. It is time that cinema seeks a redefinition of women as objects of male gaze,’ he said.
‘Going beyond the stereotypes will do a great help to the cause of women in Indian society. Cinema should come up with more progressive representations of women. Cinema must create a separate and independent space for Indian women to help them realise their dreams. Such portrayals would do justice to women and their role in the society,’ he said.
Addressing the gathering at ‘19th Justice Sunanda Bhandare Memorial Lecture’ held here, Justice Sathasivam said cinema must be a ‘quest for social change through entertainment’.
‘Film is a reflection of society, both present and past. I think the film and its innovations sometimes have to catch up to society but sometimes it leads society too,’ the CJI said.
