Church theft in Hari Nagar: 42-year-old arrested

With the arrest of a 42-year-old person, Delhi Police claimed to have cracked the case of theft at a church in West Delhi’s Hari Nagar on the intervening night between May 22 and 23, police said.
The accused, identified as <g data-gr-id="25">Harviner</g> Singh Suri, alias Sunny, was arrested after a mega manhunt conducted by 20 teams comprising more than 100 policemen. He is addicted to alcohol and had allegedly stolen the money to buy booze, said the police. The incident took place on the intervening night of May 22 and May 23 when an incident of theft occurred in St Kuriakose Elias Chavara Church in Hari Nagar, by breaking open the lock of the ‘Donation Box’ beneath the statue of Mother Mary.
The incident was also captured on CCTV camera.
A case of theft was registered at Hari Nagar Police Station. “Keeping in view the sensitivity of the case, resources of the entire district were put at work. As many as 20 teams comprising more than 100 policemen were tasked to catch the accused. More than thousand people were examined and around 100 suspects were rounded up,” said Pushpendra Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West). Suri went to jail in a theft case earlier. During interrogation, the accused disclosed there is a general view among his group of mischief mongers that they can get easy money by committing thefts near religious places from people visiting there and also from donation boxes where people donate as they can easily camouflage himself as a devotee and escape easily, he said.
