Chocolate factory gutted

Two women were injured in a major fire that broke out in a factory in Aman Vihar area of outer Delhi on Tuesday morning, police said. It took firemen over two-and-a-half hours to douse the flames, which was reported around 3.45 am from the factory manufacturing chocolates in Hari Enclave. ‘Around three fire tenders were pressed into service and the situation was brought under control by 6.15 am. We have found two liquefied petroleum gas cylinders from the building, but the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained,’ a fire official said.

The injured are presently undergoing treatment for burn injuries at a private hospital. The fire is said to have started from the front of the building and quickly spread towards the back. ‘Usually, over 50 labourers work in the factory. As it was early morning, many of the night workers had left due to which a major incident was averted,’ the official said.

About 10 workers were in the factory when the fire broke out. According to fire officials, it took them some time to reach the spot as the roads leading to the area were narrow, which made the factory virtually inaccessible.

‘The cause of the fire has not been detected yet, but there were poor electrical arrangements in the factory. The fire safety measures were inappropriate. Initial investigations suggest that short circuit could have been the cause,’ the official said.  In a separate incident, a minor fire broke out at Axis Bank’s branch in Daryaganj area of central Delhi. However, no one was injured in the blaze, police said.
