Chintan Shivir sees divided opinions

On the first day of Chintan Shivir there were three hours of brainstorming and deliberations in each of the subgroups with a marked focus on the viewpoint given by the youth leaders during the discussions. Even on Saturday there will be discussions from 9:30 am to 12:30 am after which the final resolution will be drafted and then announced on Sunday at AICC meet.

Highly placed sources in the party who were a part of the high-level sub-committee headed by Antony which deliberated on the issue of ‘Emerging Political Challenges,’ said some leaders in the party like Deepa Dasmunsi in particular said that coalition should not exist.

Her view was backed by the youth congress leaders who spoke against alliances. But the veterans in the party spoke otherwise. Leaders like Chidambaram, Kamal Nath and Jairam Ramesh voiced a collective view saying that the future of the party lies in coalition, said a source. Others in the group include Sheila Dikshit, Harish Rawat and Kapil Sibal.

While in the group headed by Anand Sharma the discussion was focused on ‘India’s changing role in regional and global sphere.’ A source in the party says that during discussion in this group there was emphasis from everyone to send a strong message to Pakistan after the horrific incident so that they don’t perceive India to be a soft state. Salman Khurshid, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Shashi Tharoor, Karan Singh and Rehman Khan were a part of this group. The PM visited this group for an hour and gave remarks at the end of the discussion.

‘We were happy to interact with the youth and get their perspective. Even though they condemned this incident. There were no talks which indicated the beginning of a war,’ said a senior Congress leader who is a part of this group. In the subgroup on organization headed by Ghulam Nabi Azad there were voices raised which wanted Rahul Gandhi as the next PM candidate for the party.

Chidambaram, Mukul Wasnik, Jaiprash Agarwal,Raj Babbar were also in this group.

The socio economic challenges subgroup group headed by Digvijaya Singh saw heated discussions as the representatives from Kerala said that they felt the government was being run by corporates and they also protested against the deregulation of diesel prices. There was a lot of criticism of the government in this group. Vayalar Ravi, Ramesh Chennithala, Sachin Pilot,Shakeel Ahmed and Deepender Hooda were in this group.

While the group headed by Girja Vyas focused on gender sensitization. Krishna Tirath said the emphasis was on how to empower women in the social economic and political way. We discussed about teaching our children about gender equality and respecting women,she said.

Even Sonia Gandhi came to this session and gave suggestions including creating equality amongst men and women especially to be instilled in the male psyche and that there is a need to sensitize male psyche. Jairam Ramesh was a part this group.
