China refuses to withdraw platoon from Depsang

Much awaited third flag meeting was held on Tuesday in Ladakh between army commanders from China and India to discuss the issue of Chinese soldiers intrusion and setting up a camp 19 kms within Indian territory.

China has reportedly refused to withdraw the platoon of soldiers who have pitched tents 19 kms into Indian territory near the Line of Actual Control in the Depsang Valley in Ladakh. Two earlier flag meetings between army commanders of both sides remained inconclusive.

Addressing the Unified Commanders Conference - an annual event where commanders of all three services meet to discuss India’s security concerns and blueprints - Defence Minister AK Antony said India is ‘committed to peaceful resolution of the situation, through military and diplomatic dialogue’.

He added India will ‘take every possible step, at all levels, to safeguard it’s interest.’

The government’s refusal to take a stronger stand with China despite an incursion has been attacked by the  opposition BJP and questioned by two of the government’s allies - Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Samjawadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.
