‘China attaches great importance to its neighbours’

China on Friday said successful visits by prime ministers of India, Russia and Mongolia here showed the importance Beijing is attaching to its neighbours.
Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev and Mongolian prime minister Norovyn Altankhuyag visited Beijing around the same time of the visit of prime minister Manmohan Singh, who concluded a three-day visit on Thursday.
These successful visits are of great significance to the further growth of China’s relations with the three countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing.
‘I have noted that some media and experts have said that concurrent visits by foreign leaders reflect a high-level of good neighbourly and cooperative relations between China and surrounding countries,’ she said recalling a Chinese proverb that a distant relative is not as good as a close neighbour.
‘The Chinese government attaches great importance to neighbourhood diplomacy and unswervingly pursues a policy of building good neighbourhood relations and partnerships with neighbouring countries,’ she said.
‘In the future we will stay committed to building up strategic mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation across the board and realizing mutually beneficial and common development with our neighbours,’ she said.
An article in the official daily Global Times on Friday praised the three visits saying that ‘this autumn, China’s neighbourhood diplomacy has been impressive.’
Besides the three visits, both Chinese president Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang visited some Southeast Asian countries.
The visits have deepened strategic mutual trust between China and ASEAN, and delivered the message that China is willing to be kind and attentive to its neighbours, it said.
These diplomatic activities of the new Chinese leadership have shown the ‘warm power’ of China’s diplomacy, it said.
Outlining the reason for Chinese move, it said, politically, the recent Southeast Asian visits are concrete steps to build a harmonious neighbourhood aimed at consolidating the integration of China and ASEAN.
